Your bedroom is one of the most important rooms in your house — and should be a cozy retreat for you to enjoy fully. Whether it's luxurious bedding, soothing color schemes, or unique accent pieces, paying close attention to your design decisions can result in a chic space for rest and relaxation. We invited 10 Dering Hall interior designers to share their take on the best ways to take a bedroom design to the next level.
Use One Color.
"Envelop a room in one color to make it cozy. Here we specified a deep blue color for the walls and a slightly darker tone for the trim for additional definition. I read somewhere that a blue bedroom can lower one’s blood pressure and improve the quality of your sleep. That’s enough to convince me. The soft white lacquered ceiling adds to the dreaminess." — Gideon Mendelson, Mendelson Group, Inc.
Be Patient.
"This finished bedroom, with planning and execution, took four months. The nightstands were custom, the wallpaper handmade, the bedframe, furniture, rugs, lighting and accessories took months to arrive from our vendors. Then we had to consider the electrical work, painting, application of the wallcovering, and the installation of the furniture. The takeaway is that a well-done room takes time, planning and patience, but the outcome is worth waiting for." — Douglas Stratton, Stratton Design Group
Make a Statement with Wallpaper.
"Wallpaper is a transformative way to create a statement in a room. This deGournay wallpaper with 12-carat white gold and aluminum accents is striking and serves as the foundation of the room, but its neutral colors allow for the freedom to add accent colors such as the moss green and magenta chosen for this space. Choosing neutral colors for a big-ticket item such as hand painted wallpaper will give you more versatility because you can always switch up the other colors in the room quite easily." — Paloma Contreras, Paloma Contreras Design
Enjoy the Luxury of High-Quality Bedding.
"We decorate a lot of bedrooms big and small and in lots of budget ranges, but the one item that makes the most difference is bedding for the beds. Make sure the bedding and duvet cover fit the bed. My personal taste is to have color and pattern in the bedroom that are soothing and conducive to relaxing." — Joe Human, designs by human.
Incorporate a Desk.
“I love adding a desk next to a bed when space allows. This creates an additional surface for letter writing, or a place to work on late-night projects with a laptop. It’s also the perfect place for a breakfast tray when that special someone wants to treat you to breakfast in bed." — Denise McGaha, Denise McGaha Interiors
Experiment with Textures.
"A monochromatic look mixed with various textures is a sexy combination. Pick luxurious textiles for your bed and a solid shag rug. High-contrast neutrals like black with ecru, browns and blues feel very serene. Instead of bold patterns and colors, use texture and tones to create an updated look." — Elena Calabrese, Elena Calabrese Design & Decor
Add Personal Touches.
"When decorating a master bedroom, we tend to lean towards a calming color palette and sculptural light fixtures. We also like to personalize the space with bedding. In this Upper East Side master bedroom in New York City, we created a dusty lavender color scheme with an accent of hand-embroidered wallpaper. The bedside pendants are like the jewelry and the metal nicely contrasts with the delicate flowers. The bedside tables personalize the space—vintage nesting tables for her and a Frampton Co table with storage for him." — Elena Frampton, Frampton Co
Consider a Dose of Drama to Add Personality.
"When designing for this young client we were given two leads: 1) purple is my favorite color, and 2) I like a bit of the exotic! We were then given free reign on this project so we chose to upholster the walls in purple velvet (wall upholstery in a master bedroom is a great way to create a cocoon and dampen sound). We custom designed the bed with a nod to the 'exotic' using a plum mohair with tufting and a unique cut-out. We used pierced brass hanging lanterns to continue the drama in the room." — Patrick Dragonette, Dragonette Ltd
Try Layering for an Inviting Environment.
"Good quality bedding and a calming, neutral color palette are key to creating an inviting bedroom environment. We like to layer accessories as well with throw blankets, pillows and, of course, a delicious smelling candle!" — Kristin Paton, Kristin Paton Interiors
Don't Forget the Details.
"Drapes and shades are a fundamental element to make a space feel warm, and I also like to use rugs to make the space feel softer. There should always be an inviting area to sit, read, and relax. As for lighting, I prefer warm, non-directional dimmable light such as cove light or from under a nightstand, and I hide outlets so the design isn't interrupted. I use artwork as an accessory to complement the overall design. And accessories like a carafe, a tray for jewelry, and books can make it feel more personal." — Deborah Wecselman, DWD Inc.
